I think I'll cut over to my new weblog design this weekend. Shhhhh! I'd do it now but there's still some work to do, migrating the archive pages, rebuilding the site, making sure the navigation doesn't break and so on. Getting back into markup was a learning experience. The Web developer extension for Firefox was indispensable.
There's an interesting thread on the MythTV developer list about how to bring archive.org content to the television set. Imagine, a TV with no umbilical cords, just the full power of the Internet. Now that would be exciting.
I have accepted an invitation to join the RSS 2.0 Advisory Board, a group that supports and advocates for RSS.
My motivations overlap significantly with those of fellow board member Rodgers Cadenhead, whose announcement was so well titled that I couldn't resist copying. But I also come to this role as a customer. RSS has allowed me to build some pretty darn interesting software applications, and imo we've barely seen the tip of the iceberg of what is possible. There's a lot of new software to develop, and life is short. Onward!

Yesterday's Connection on weblogs wasn't especially informative to this blogger. The guest, New Yorker writer George Packer, said that he went through a phase where he spent too much time reading blogs. Addictive yes, potentially time consuming, yes, but does he use a news aggregator, and if so, does he use it efficiently? I go through phases of more and less reading, depending on what else I've got on my plate. If I'm too busy to read much, the stories slip quietly out of my aggregator without my having to manage them, so I can go with the flow. Packer also said he'd like to see more blogs dedicated exclusively to journalism. I'd like to see more blogs dedicated to singing my praises, but that's not how it works :-). See also David Weinberger, who points out a significant omission. This isn't so much a dig at Packer, who has written excellently about Iraq in recent months, as the discussion itself, which left me feeling kind of flat.
A new version of the Mozilla Thunderbird mail program was released last week. Seems to work fine in my environment, IMAP over SSL, after a few tweaks in the preferences menu.
On order: Gateway Connected DVD Player. The trick here is to get network-originated video to the living room. Gateway's little box may be the missing link.
